Judy, Ken, Norma and Cheryl
I was so sorry to get your news about Bob on the answering machine when Jim and I returned from holiday out west.....sorry too that I was not able to help in your search for Barb Brown. You caught up with her eventually.
I have fond memories of Bob that go back to public school days in Beardmore when we tried to out do each other to get the better mark on exams. Then too followed his career which was a very successful one. I enjoyed meeting up with all of you in Florida when we visited with Barb and Terry.
No doubt there is a great void in your lives which will only lessen with time.
Hugs. Gail.

Growing-up as Bob's son of a surety... was an experience, adventure, most certainly an education... and honour.
My earliest thoughts of who Dad was and what he did as a "Director" had my little brain thinking in 1973/74 in Terrace Bay, Ontario that when Dad left the house in morning he went downtown and stood on the street corner somewhere to "direct" traffic.
As I got a little older and would go to the board office with him in Schreiber and then being in school in my public school years... I picked up quickly that most men and women around me respected my Dad and they would voice that to me. It was a really nice feeling and always made me very proud. I felt special that.. "that was my Dad".
There were times the opposite affect came my way... I faced a few older bullies that gave me an upsetting time as Dad's picture was often on the front page of the newspaper but Dad pulled me down into the basement and taught me some boxing concepts and that intrigued me. I pulled out a right hook in such a situation in the coming days and silenced many of my issues for quite awhile. This led to interest in martial arts which eventually evolved into what I do for a living today.
Dad was strong, confident, passionate about what was important to him and he rarely took "crap" from anyone. These traits often gave us strength... a sense of being protected and safe when around him or under his wing.
Dad set a pretty high standard for success around him. It wasn't always easy learning how to balance that growing-up until I genuinely learned that success comes in many forms and from different vantage points.
I liken my father to Pierre Trudeau. I didn't always agree with his politics but you just had to respect a man who could and would throw down at a drop of a hat if necessary and who had the attitude... "Just watch me!"
I have been told many times that I am my father's son in at least enough things that it is noticeable and that is a comfort me that a glimpse of him lives on in this regard.
I love you Dad. You made a massive imprint on all of us. We will see you again.

Judy and Family; My thoughts and prayers go out to you and the family. No one can understand the loss unless they have experienced it. I lost my husband in June. I have a saying that I think you will enjoy.
If there ever comes a day when we can't be together
Keep me in your heart, I will stay there forever....Winnie the Pooh.
As a Trustee for the York Region Board of Education for over eleven years, I worked closely with Bob and admired the forthright, up front personality he had. Especially the "Open Door" policy. He was a special person and he will be greatly missed.

Like so many others who have offered their heartfelt condolences, I too was privileged to work with Bob. He hired me as his Administrative Assistant at the York Region District School Board and so began some of the best years of my career. We shared a love of all things that flew and I remember walking into his office for my interview being surrounded by magnificent photos of planes from every era of every make and model.
Perhaps one of the most memorable moments of Bob's career happened at his retirement celebration when he was presented with ... a puppy. I believe every heart in the room melted along with his when he took the puppy in his arms and smiled with that special twinkle in his eye. An extraordinary moment for an extraordinary man.
To Bob's entire family, I offer my sincerest condolences - you are most assuredly dealing with a loss that will be felt forever.

Dear Rob, Vicki and Charlene:
We feel a heavy sense of sadness for you in the very sudden loss of your father. Upon hearing of his passing, through Rob's recent telephone message, we reminisced about our connections with your family in 'The Pines' (70's & 80's): your father joining in a Lanark County styled 'work bee' to build a fence around the tennis court, neighbourhood swims and birthday parties in your pool (with special popcorn snacks), bicycling adventures, exploring the boundary-free rural subdivision and the surrounding forest. All are pleasant memories of a long ago but, not forgotten time. Now, the days to come will give you time to remember and reflect on all the things your father meant to each of you. We're certain that you will hear his guiding, supportive 'voice' as you continue to live your own lives.
In sympathy,
Beth and Allison Graham,

He spoke often of his family; he loved you all very much. Here is hoping that great memories of Bob and the love of your family and friends will help to bring you peace. My thoughts are with you. I wish I could send my condolences in person to you all, but will have to send them from Thunder Bay. I am truly in disbelief as you all must be as Uncle Bob was so alive and vibrant when I last saw him. I am so grateful for the beautiful day we had for Nana's 98th birthday in July, and have very fond memories of the fun we all had that day at Surprise Lake. My family all remember the individual conversations we had with Bob that day and will cherish those memories. I know that each of you must also have some special memories of your time with him and hope you get strength from remembering his love for each of you. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Sending love and hugs to all.

I am so sorry I am too far away to make it to the Memorial Service.
The six years I worked for Bob as his Administrative Assistant at the Board Office were the most exciting years of my educational career due to him. He was a great boss who had faith in his staff and set all of us free to achieve our highest potential. Yet we knew he had our backs. We worked hard and laughed harder. I will never forget the Staff Christmas party where the senior men dressed for a Beauty Contest wearing gowns provided by the women on staff. He looked ravishing in his strapless full length silver flecked ball gown. He crippled his feet into silver pumps and had the staff in tears as he paraded down the "gang plank". They loved him for it! He was upset that he came in second to Jack Webber but put that down to the fact that Jack got to show his legs and he didn't.
I know you are all heartbroken and I offer my sincerest condolences on your loss. There are many, many of us out there who weep with you. Take care of one another. When the time is right, I hope you can share the laughs you had together as a family. It will help heal your hearts and keep him close.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all. God speed Bob.

Dear Judy and Family:
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy in your deep loss. I'm sure you will remember meeting me at Bob's office in the '80's, at The York Region Board of Education in Aurora. I was proud to have had the privilege of being Bob's Executive Assistant to the Director of Education for about 8 years. The position carried much responsibility and pressure in dealing with the public, staff and elected officials at the municipal and provincial levels.
Bob's integrity and full support of my actions in carrying out my duties allowed me to function to his and my own utter satisfaction, and that of the Trustees and our colleagues.
Bob was much respected for his professional concerns of placing the welfare of our students as his first priority in his leadership of one of the largest educational systems in the province at that time.
We shared a love of sense of humour that got us all through what would have otherwise been extreme stressful conditions.
During this time of the shocking news of Bob's sudden death, please know that my prayers are with you all.
