Obituary of Steven Paul Slezak
Steven (aka “DeeDee”) passed away suddenly yet peacefully on Friday May 26th.
Having grown up on St-Dominique St. in Montreal, Steven attended Montreal High, and continued studies at Concordia and McGill, earning a Bachelor’s degree in geography and certificates in special education. He was a straight “A” student, but had to work at it.
An exceptional, detailed, and dedicated teacher, he taught emotionally and behaviourally challenged youth throughout Montreal during a career that spanned 30+ years.
Steven played defensive end for his high school football team in high school, and later softball as an adult. He coached baseball to kids for many seasons, and volunteered at the pool as an official while he was a resident of Pincourt.
An avid collector of all things sports and beyond, Steven was meticulous in his organisation and record keeping. Dubbed unusually lucky, he enjoyed games of chance, trips to the Montreal and Akwesasne casinos, and of course a nice budget-friendly buffet! He also enjoyed his pranks, with nary a Christmas or birthday going by without someone spending many minutes unwrapping a gift from him with box upon box, only to find a roll of toilet paper, or a lump of coal, or his ultimate favourite, a picture of himself! You know you’d made his inner-circle if you’d been “pictured” by Deed.
He is pre-deceased by his parents (Helen Oravec “Bobby” and Samuel Slezak “Dedo”), as well as his best friend and only sister Margie - whose sides he never left.
Steven is survived by his loving wife of 34 years Veta (Lorentiu), his step-son Andrew (Aiden and Tara), brother-in-law Steve, nephews Jeff, Michael, and James, great nieces Madeleine, Sophie and Chloe, great nephews Nolan and Griffin, and their mothers Jennifer and Maricar. Loved also by extended family and friends; Gwen, Tucky, Chris and Rick, Chantal, Marc, Tyler, Riley, Renata, and countless others.
Deed loved few, but those he did love, he loved fully and unconditionally. He will be missed terribly and his memory and spirit cherished forever.
There will be no formal service at his request.
Those wishing to make a donation in his name to the Dementia Society are asked to do so in lieu of sending flowers.
