Obituary of Michael James Sullivan

Michael James Sullivan (1946 to 2022) – Horton Township (Renfrew), Ontario Michael was born on July 22, 1946 in Montreal, Quebec. He passed away suddenly at his home on Saturday, February 19, 2022 with his loving feline companion, Charlie, by his side. Despite his failing health over the last 5 years, Michael’s tenacious spirit carried him through the challenging times. Michael is survived by daughter Jeni (Darrell) and granddaughter Treah (aged 15), son Dolan (Cassie) and grandchildren Marlo (aged 3) and Talan (aged 1), sister Eileen McManamon, niece Catharine Fox (Michael, and daughter Ava), and nephew Michael McManamon. Michael was predeceased by his parents John and Mary (Walsh) Sullivan. Michael grew up mainly in Calgary and Toronto, and in his younger years, he tried many avenues to expand his life experience, and spent some time at university and serving in the Navy for two years. Michael spent most of his adult-life in and around Alberta (in Calgary and Edmonton areas, and Strathmore). He was a longstanding member of the Cheadle Lions Club. Michael was a true Albertan at heart, and had a passion for the country life and horses. Michael followed his passions, and worked with horses and antique furniture for the bulk of his working career. He was involved with the thoroughbred industry and horse racing in Calgary (Stampede Grounds) and Edmonton (Northlands Park) for many years. Michael owned his own race horse, Nauticallil (mare), and raised her fillies – Nautililmiss, Vancouverlil, Maypoleleaves and Jackislilwacki – to be successful race horses. After years of working with thoroughbred race horses, he was an experienced farm hand and dedicated over 12 years working at KPM Investments (thoroughbred-side). Michael had a great love for animals, and always felt as a kindred spirit with wolves. He owned many dogs – most notably Jewel and Jezebel. He was a talented artist from painting scenery to making fancy candles. Michael was spiritual and a down to earth man who had a quick and sharp wit. He dearly loved his children and was very proud of them and their accomplishments. He loved socializing with his friends; watching his sports teams, the Maple Leafs and Calgary Stampeders ; reading books and learning new facts and tidbits; listening to bluegrass and folk country music; going fishing; and camping. He was also a skilled craftsman – refinishing and refurbishing antique furniture. After a successful business of refurbishing antique furniture later in life, Michael retired in 2015 and moved back to Ontario. He spent his remaining years in Horton Township, Ontario enjoying gardening and puttering around his home. As per Michael’s wishes, no public services will be held. His immediate family will privately come together to celebrate his life.
